Taylor Kohrs worked with the City of Thornton for the site work with the removal and replacement of the asphalt pavement at the Thornton Justice Center.
This project included the removal of the existing asphalt surface and poor soils, installation of a new storm water system, laying apron liner material and seaming together, structural fill and compact and laying the new asphalt surface. Subsurface soil remediation and augmentation was performed to enhance the performance of the parking lots, Sally Port, and the storm drainage systems. Excavation of existing sub-grade, installation of a geomembrane liner and drainage system was performed on the site. Additional work included concrete flat-work, replacement of the mechanically stabilized earth wall, and full replacement of the existing Sally Port floor from slab on grade to a structural floor.
The project was performed in three project phases:
Phase A: 9 foot caissons were installed 23 feet deep inside the police station Sally Port, which had very limited space for the drill rig. Structural steel beams were installed under the Sally Port floor with a new concrete slab on grade 2. Last, the three building chillers were re-installed using a large crane pick.
Phase B: Nineteen removable bollards were installed. Then the unforeseen fiber optic wire/conduit was located and re-located so the line avoided the new storm sewer system.
Phase C: Most MSE blocks were salvaged and reused to re-install the new 80ft long MSE retaining wall. The metal stairs were removed and re-installed. Lastly, new fence posts were installed by salvaging and reusing the AmeriStar fence panels from before the demo.
